What Structural Pallet Rack Is

In 30 Seconds

Structural pallet rack uses hot-rolled steel channel for uprights and beams, bolted through the web rather than clipped into a punched column. Heavier components, thicker sections, a mechanical connection instead of friction and gravity.

That sounds minor. In service it isn't. A roll-formed upright is cold-formed sheet with a teardrop punch pattern, engineered and reliable under its rated load, but it dents on impact, and a dented column has lost section where it's carrying compression. Structural channel takes the hit and keeps its section, with a bolted joint that doesn't disengage when struck from the side.

  • What it is. Pallet rack built from hot-rolled structural steel channel, bolted together rather than clipped.
  • Why it exists. Roll-formed rack is lighter, cheaper and entirely adequate until something hits it or the temperature cycles.
  • Where it is standard. Freezers, cold storage, steel service centers, and any aisle a fork truck works hard.
  • What it costs. More per position than roll-formed. Less than replacing a damaged system twice.

Where Structural Is the Specification

Where It's Specified

Structural rack earns its higher cost in specific environments, mostly where impact is guaranteed or the connection has to hold under conditions a clipped joint can't tolerate. Six conditions cover where it's the right call.

  • Freezer And Cold Storage

Thermal cycling loosens friction-based connections over time. A bolted joint does not care. Structural is the default in freezer construction for this reason alone.

  • Steel Service Centers

Heavy, long, awkward loads handled by large trucks in tight aisles, all day. The environment structural was designed for.

  • High-Throughput Distribution

Where truck traffic per aisle per shift is high enough that impacts are a certainty rather than a risk.

  • Food And Beverage Washdown

Sanitation chemistry and standing water, where galvanized structural survives and painted cold-formed does not.

  • Seismic And High-Load Design

More material and a bolted connection give the engineer more to work with when the calculation gets demanding.

  • Rack-Supported Structures

Where the racking carries a deck or the building itself and the design load is no longer just pallets.

Roll-Formed or Structural?

Picking the Frame

In a steel service center or a freezer, structural is not an upgrade. It is the specification.

Decision Roll-Formed Structural
Material Cold-formed sheet Hot-rolled channel
Connection Teardrop clip-in Bolted through the web
Impact Resistance Dents and loses section Absorbs and retains section
Reconfiguration Fast, no tools Slower, bolted
Freezer & Washdown Not preferred Standard
Cost per Position Lower Higher
Typical Service Life Long, if undisturbed Long, under abuse

The honest version: most buildings do not need structural. Roll-formed selective is the right answer in a clean, well-run distribution center with disciplined drivers and adequate aisles, and it gets specified far more often than structural. The question is whether the environment punishes steel, and that is usually already known.

Construction

Finish by Environment

Finish follows the environment rather than the budget. In a freezer, condensation forms every time a door opens and the temperature swings. Galvanizing is specified for that reason, and painted structural in a freezer is a corrosion problem waiting on a schedule.

  • Uprights. Hot-rolled structural C-channel
  • Beams. Structural channel, bolted to the upright web
  • Connection. Bolted, torqued to specification
  • Base. Heavy base plates, anchored to slab
  • Decking. Wire mesh, bar grating, or none where the load spans beam to beam
  • Design standard. RMI/ANSI MH16.1
  • Finish. Painted standard; galvanized for freezer, washdown and outdoor

Engineered and Installed in Atlanta, GA

In-House Engineering

Structural rack is heavier to handle and slower to erect, and the bolted connections have to be torqued correctly rather than tapped into place. It is not a system to hand to a crew learning on the job.

We have professional engineers on staff, so stamped drawings and calculations are part of the normal workflow rather than a subcontracted delay. Structural projects reach the permit threshold more often than roll-formed ones, because the loads are higher and the installations are taller.

One contract for the whole scope. Structural racking regularly goes in alongside a mezzanine or a vertical lift as part of one facility project, under one permit and one crew.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

Is structural rack worth the extra cost?

In a freezer, a steel service center, or an aisle with heavy truck traffic, yes, and the comparison is not close over a ten year horizon. In a clean, low-traffic distribution building it is usually money spent on a problem you do not have.

Can structural and roll-formed be mixed in one system?

Not within a bay, and not casually within a row. Components from different systems and different manufacturers are not interchangeable, and mixing them invalidates the capacity rating. We verify what is already in the building before adding to it.

Does structural rack need a permit?

The same threshold rules apply as for any storage rack, and structural installations cross them more often because they tend to be taller and more heavily loaded. We identify what applies during the proposal.

What about seismic requirements?

Seismic design changes anchorage, base plate sizing and frame design. Georgia is not a high seismic region, but the calculation is still run and the anchors are still engineered rather than assumed.
