What a Cleanroom Air Shower Is
Quick answer
An enclosed antechamber at the entrance to a controlled environment, where high-velocity HEPA filtered air strips loose particles off a gowned worker before they step into the room. People are the largest single contamination source in most cleanrooms, and a gowned worker still carries what the walk through the plant put on the outside of the garment.
- Wall and ceiling nozzles deliver air at roughly 6,000 to 10,000 feet per minute.
- A cycle typically runs 15 to 30 seconds, set at commissioning against class and garment type.
- Doors are interlocked, which is what makes it an airlock rather than a corridor with fans in it.
- Dislodged particles return through the filter rather than travelling into the room.

Low traffic ISO 8 spaces
Where a handful of people enter per shift and the process is not particle sensitive, a well designed gowning room often reaches the same result.
Where the pressure cascade is not designed
A unit dropped into a room without the pressure relationships worked out improves nothing, and can make things worse by creating a pressure event on every cycle.
Where the problem is the process
If particle counts spike during a specific operation rather than at shift change, the contamination is coming from the process and an air shower will not touch it.
Where headcount will outgrow the unit
A single person shower on a line scaling to three shifts becomes the thing everybody props open. Size for the future state or expect the unit to be defeated.

Do we actually need an air shower?
It depends on class, traffic and how particle sensitive the process is. ISO 5 and ISO 6 spaces almost always warrant one. ISO 7 and ISO 8 spaces with low headcount often do not. We will tell you plainly which category you are in.
Can it go in without shutting the room down?
Usually. The unit arrives assembled or in panels and bolts up dry, so the work is short and contained. The tie-ins that need planning are the interlock wiring, the makeup air and the recertification.
What drives the cost?
Configuration, chamber size, construction material and filtration. A single person powder-coated unit and a stainless tunnel sized for cart traffic are different orders of project, so we quote after reviewing the class, the headcount and the material flow.
Do you handle the permit and inspection?
Our air shower installations include the drawings and permitting support, and emergency egress override on the interlock is a code requirement rather than an option.
Can one be added to an existing cleanroom?
Often yes. The three constraints are clear height above the unit for the plenum, floor space at the entry, and whether the existing pressure cascade can absorb another stage. We verify all three during a site review before quoting.
What maintenance does it need?
Filter replacement on a schedule set by pressure drop, nozzle inspection, interlock testing, and recertification alongside the room's particle count validation. The interlock is the part that gets neglected and the part that matters most.
