Gorbel Mandrel Lift System

Power and Motion was recently selected by Multicell Packaging to install a Gorbel Work Station Crane designed to remove a mandrel and paper roll from an unwinding machine.

The Multicell unwinding machine requires loading and removing an air shaft and paper roll during production.  The loaded shaft weighs approx. 4000#, making it difficult to load and unload.

Power and Motion met with the employees at Multicell to go over the application in person.  Collectively, we came up with a preliminary design for the ergonomic handling system.  Power and Motion then provided a thorough written proposal and AutoCAD drawings of the proposed solution.  Once an order was placed our engineers went back to the job-site and field measured the approval drawings with the customer.

The Gorbel workstation crane was designed as a free standing system capable of handling two tons.  An electric R&M chain hoist was used for the north and south lift motion, and a custom made Bushman spreader beam was designed to fit perfectly around the diameter of the shaft.

The crane, hoist, and spreader beam went into manufacturing, and upon shipment were installed at the job-site in one working day.
